Anthony “Tony” Sgroi
Anthony “Tony” Sgroi, 81, husband of Iolanda A. (Cascini) Sgroi, passed away on Aug. 6, at home after a stroke and other complications.
Born in Randazzo, Sicily, Italy, on Sept. 27, 1941, the son of the late Giovanni and Giuseppina (Privitera) Sgroi. He resided in Randazzo, Sicily, until he was 15 years old. He and his family immigrated to America in 1956 and settled in Meriden. In 2011, Anthony and his wife, Iolanda, moved to Westbrook. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Mr. Sgroi was employed by International Silver in Meriden for 16 years before working at Thurston Foods Inc. in Wallingford, where he managed the warehouse until his retirement in 2016.
Anthony served in the United States Army as a medic during the Vietnam War.
Besides his wife, Iolanda of 54 years, he is survived by his two sons, Anthony Sgroi, Jr., and his wife, Tammy, and their children, Erica Mittica (husband Christopher) and Anthony Sgroi, III (wife Alyssa); and JohnArthur Sgroi and his wife, Kimberly, and their children, Lily Catherine Sgroi, William Andrew Sgroi, and Henry John Sgroi. He is also survived by his two sisters, Concetta DeMatteo (partner John) and her children, Dennis DeMatteo and his wife, Lisa, and their children, Jordan and Lizzy, and John DeMatteo and his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Bella and Gio, and Rosann Borkowski and her children, Gregory and Danny.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon at Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish, Mt. Carmel Church. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
