08/03/2023 10:59 AMPeter Jan Swanson, 76, of Madison, passed away peacefully on July 28. Born in Mineola, New York, on Feb. 2, 1947, he was the son of the late Peter Robert Swanson and Mildred (Nelson) Swanson. Peter grew up in Baldwin on Long Island. He attended Long Island University at Stony Brook and became a physician’s assistant and registered cardiopulmonary therapist. In 1976, he moved to Fairport, New York, and had a long career in medical sales.
Peter was a faithful defender of the United States of America in both the Navy and the Navy Reserves as a corpsman and flight medic for the Fleet Marines. He proudly served in the Vietnam War and earned the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross, the New York State Merit Award, and the Navy and Marine Corps medal. Peter was previously Commander of the VFW, a 40-year member of the honor guard, and also a Mason.
When not volunteering his time at various Veterans initiatives, you could often find him enjoying the beach in Madison. He always had a love for the water and boating.
As well as his parents, Peter is Predeceased by his sisters Lynn Grillo and Jean Carol Pawlicki.
Peter will be greatly missed by his beloved children, Robert Swanson (Jaclyn) of Pittsford, New York and Kristen Buckley (James) of Montvale, New Jersey and his former spouse Joanne Swanson. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Ryan, James, Gavin, Connor, and Ciaran, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Lutheran Church of Madison in Madison.
