Timothy Killian Gallagher

Timothy Killian “Tim” Gallagher passed away in his sleep at his home in Hamden on July 10. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, on April 23, 1975, he was the son of Pamela Durborow Gallagher and Paul Killian Gallagher.

He attended Phillips Academy Andover, graduating in 1993. There he played varsity cross country, indoor track, and lacrosse and was sports editor and writer for The Phillipian, the student newspaper. Tim graduated from Columbia University in 1997 with a B.A. in history.

In his early career, he reviewed computer games for happypuppy.com and was a journalist for the Lewisboro Ledger, a weekly newspaper. He continued to write and edit independently. An avid reader and student, he enjoyed discussions on many topics, including sports, especially professional football, history, and current events. His recall of detail made him a formidable debater. He added painting and music to his creative pursuits.

In his mid-20s, Tim began his battle with mental illness. He diligently worked to maintain a stable life with his illness, often reaching out to family members to share his love of music and, recently, with his new banjo. Tim enjoyed being outside regardless of the weather. An opportunity to be on a fishing boat was a joy. He was an affectionate and playful uncle to his nieces.

He is survived by his parents; sisters, Katherine and Sarah; brother-in-law Chris Smeenk; and nieces, Corinne and Caelin. Tim will be remembered for his humor, creativity, passion, and intelligence.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI.org) or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 232 Durham Road, Madison, with a reception to follow.
