07/27/2023 10:25 AMDr. Suzanne Saunders Taylor, 90, passed away peacefully in Middletown on July 8. Suzanne lived in Old Saybrook for over 35 years. Dr. Taylor was born on Aug. 20, 1932, in Meriden, to Clifford and Gladys (Maney) Saunders.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Patricia Taylor of Mansfield, and son, Scott Taylor of Storrs; four grandchildren, Stephanie Ruest, Timothy Taylor, Heather Hawkins, and Amber Taylor; and many great-grandchildren, as well as her partner, Paul.
Dr. Taylor’s professional career began at UConn, where she received a bachelors with a major in English and a minor in Industrial Relations. On Aug. 19, 1970, she became the first Woman to Graduate with a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut. In 1972, Dr. Taylor was hired as the first professional woman on the staff of the Connecticut Education Association. Following her extensive career with CEA, Dr. Taylor was hired as the executive director of the University of Rhode Island American Association of University Professors in 1992. Among many of her professional accomplishments, she proudly chaired the town of Old Saybrook Pension and Benefits Board.
Beyond her professional life was a blessed marriage to George R. Brown on March 17, 2001. They lived happily in Old Saybrook until Georges's passing in 2018. During their marriage, they were known as loyal supporters of both the athletic and art programs of UConn. Dr. Taylor was also an avid gardener and proud member of the University of Rhode Island and Connecticut Master Gardener program.
