07/27/2023 10:48 AMAlfred Austin Albert, 89, of North Haven, passed away peacefully on July 21 at the Masonicare Health Center, Wallingford. He was the beloved husband of the late Claudette A. Bouthot Albert. Born in Brunswick, Maine, on Aug. 28, 1933, he was the son of the late Alfred Laurent Albert and Agnes Phyllis Moreau Albert.
Mr. Albert was a graduate of Maryvale Seminary High School in 1951 and graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in 1955. He received a master’s degree in Latin and Greek from Trinity College, Hartford, in 1970. Mr. Albert taught for one year at Taft Prep School in Watertown, when he was drafted by the U.S. Army to serve in Germany for two years as a company clerk. After returning, Austin taught Latin and became head of the language department for 38 years at Hopkins Prep School in New Haven. He served as a Board member and then Chairman of the Board at the Wepawaug-Flagg Federal Credit Union located in Hamden for approximately 20 years.
He was a dedicated parishioner of St. Barnabas Church. Austin traveled with his wife to Canada, Russia, Italy, Hawaii, California, New Mexico, and many other states. After retirement, he and his wife spent their winters in Sarasota, FL, for 17 wonderful years. He loved the sun, the beach, and his vegetable garden. Austin was an avid reader and especially loved when his children and grandchildren dropped in.
He leaves behind a brother, Father Andrew Albert, of Boston, and his loving children: Maureen Desrosiers (Jean), James Albert, Andrew Albert (Tracey), Jo-Ann Manning (John), and David Albert (Denise); and ten beautiful grandchildren: Michelle, Lauren, Andrew, Jimmy, Steven, Ryan, Olivia, Nicole, Rebecca, and Helene; and three great-grandchildren, Ellie, Emily, and Thomas.
The visiting hours were on July 26 at The Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish at St. Barnabas Church, 44 Washington Avenue, North Haven. Interment followed in All Saints Cemetery.
