Hannele Minkkinen Sundermann


Hannele P. Minkkinen Sundermann, 68, of North Haven, passed away peacefully on June 8 at Yale New Haven Hospital with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of 45 years to Frederich Sundermann. Hannele was born in Helsinki, Finland, on Aug. 29, 1954, and was the daughter of the late T. Erik and Seidi Ström Minkkinen.

Hannele earned a bachelor’s degree in history and has worked as the parish administrator at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Haven since 2009. She was an assistant coach for the JCC Blue Marlins Swim Team since 2005. “Pat” also worked as a teacher at the BenHaven School in New Haven from 1977 through 1980 and as a program director for the CT State DMR from 1980 through 1985.

She was the mother of Erik Sundermann (Laura Mead) and the late Emma, Eleanor, and Elina Sundermann; sister of Heidi Edgerton; aunt of Jason and Jonathan Auman (Marissa); and great-aunt of Cali, Colbi, and Kai Auman. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law Warren Edgerton. She and her husband were foster parents for Mary Knoble, who lived with them from 1992 until Mary’s passing in 1997.

The visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 16, at the Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. Family and friends are invited to go at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, June 17, directly to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 292 Orange Street, New Haven, to attend a funeral service. Those attending the services may use the parking lot on the corner of State and Wall Streets. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
