Mark John Krom Jr.

Mark John Krom Jr., of Old Saybrook, passed away on May 20 after a short and unexpected battle with an extremely aggressive form of melanoma. He was born in December 1970 to Mark John Krom Sr. and Janet Brazis Krom and grew up in Milford, during which time he became an Eagle Scout of Boy Scout Troop 1.

After graduating from Notre Dame High School in West Haven, he went on to graduate from both Merrimack College and Fairfield University. Mark was a gentle giant with a huge heart and often volunteered his time to help others without asking for anything in return. When he wasn’t doing that, he enjoyed spending time on or near the water (such as fishing or relaxing on the beach), as well as at the casino, where he was up for anything from gaming to attending concerts to simply people-watching. Additionally, he also loved to not only hunt for treasure – or just the weirdest things he could find – at auctions but also enjoy all things nerdy as well, from anime to comic books to video games. He had a delightfully twisted sense of humor and loved to laugh at Family Guy, Adult Swim, and 80s movies (especially Spaceballs and Beverly Hills Cop). Even though he was quite soft-spoken, if you took the time to really listen to what he had to say, you might be lucky enough to catch one of his fantastically hilarious zingers. The Schwartz will be with him as he rides the elevator to bigger and better things!

Mark is survived by his loving family: his parents, Mark Krom Sr. (with Denise Jenkins) and Janet McFarland (with John McFarland); his siblings, Bart Krom (with Kerri Krom and family) and Kelly Krom (with Brian Buecher); and stepsiblings: Jason Jenkins (with Kim Jenkins and family), Seth Jenkins (with Denise Jenkins and family), Joe McFarland (with Carrie and family), Shannon LaBella (with Mark and family) and Ryan McFarland (with Krista and family); his daughters, Tashya Krom (with Mike Caruso) and Morgan Krom; his partner Laura Gregory (and family); his friend and former wife, Janet Whittaker; and countless other family members and friends.

A celebration of life for Mark will be held in July. Details to come. Please honor Mark’s memory by watching 80s movies with your loved ones, supporting your local food banks, or donating blood.

And to Mark, “Hasta mañana, hasta luego, hasta la pasta, hasta, LuMuKu, love you!”
