John Wendall Schumacher
John Wendall Schumacher, born June 15, 1925, to Paul Erwin Schumacher and Lillian Schreve Mayo Schumacher, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and loving caregivers on May 4. John was born and raised in Ansonia until he enlisted during World War II in the United States Marine Corps. He entered the USMC on Aug. 3, 1943, and trained at Paris Island. He became proficient in communications, artillery and was recognized as a sharpshooter. As a corporal, he participated in active operations on Leyte Island in the Philippines and was a recipient of the Philippine Liberation Medal with two Battle Stars. After serving his country, John was honorably discharged.
John married his beloved wife, Ruth, on Feb. 25, 1967, and came to settle in Essex. They were active members of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he enjoyed his passion of singing in the choir.
He had long careers with both the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Essex Town Hall. He always had a large smile and welcomed conversation.
John was predeceased by his wife, Ruth, and his son, Mark. He is survived by his daughter Paula Welter (husband Curt); sons, John Schumacher III (wife Janet), Don Schumacher (wife Christine), and Eric Schumacher (Chris); daughter-in-law Linda Schumacher; and many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 4, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Main Street, Essex, with Interment at Riverview Cemetery, North Main Street, Essex, after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 422, Essex, CT 06426.
