Frederick H. Collenburg Jr.
On April 29, Frederick H. Collenburg Jr., 82, a longtime resident of Guilford, passed away at his home surrounded by family and close friends. Mr. Collenburg was born in New Haven on Feb. 19, 1941, the son of the late Frederick Collenburg and the late Jane (Fulton) Forselius.
Fred was the proud father of his two sons, Mark of Guilford and Dennis of Salt Lake City, Utah. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Ryan Collenburg of Utah and Madison Collenburg of Guilford; his brother Richard Forselius (Debbie) of Woodbridge; his dear cousins, Mary-Ellen Efferen and Stephen Fulton; and close family friend, Deborah Ackles. Fred was predeceased by his brother Robert Collenburg (Linda) of South Carolina.
Fred grew up in Woodbridge and attended Amity High School, where he excelled at both swimming and track, winning medals at the state level. He earned a degree in civil engineering from New Haven University and worked as an estimator and project manager in commercial construction throughout his career.
In 1961 Fred moved to Guilford with his family and built his own home. Later he bought an old colonial home and again utilized his building talents restoring it. In his leisure time, he was an avid sailor and hiker. He also loved clamming and fishing. Once the warmer months came, you could find Fred on his sailboat sailing Long Island Sound or to Block Island. In the cooler months, he walked the Westwoods trails almost daily. Fred had many pets over the years and treated them as royalty. He also took great joy in feeding and watching the songbirds, turkeys, and deer out his windows.
A private graveside service will be held in Woodbridge. Those wishing may make contributions in his memory to the Guilford Land Conservation Trust, PO Box 200, Guilford, CT 06437, or to the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, 749 E Main St, Branford, CT 06405.
