Irving Tuttle King
Irving Tuttle King, 91, of Northford, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Dec. 24, 2022. He was the son of the late John and Ethel Irene (Tuttle) King and a loving husband to the late Jean (Backes) King.
Born March 15, 1931, Irving cherished growing up on Shagbark Dairy Farm. He graduated from Lyman Hall High School in 1949 and then enrolled in engineering classes at the University of Connecticut. While at UConn, he completed the basic course, senior division, Air Force ROTC, from September 1949 to June 1951. He then worked as a mechanic at Ohr’s Service Station in the mid-1950s, and it was here that he met his wife, Jean. By 1959, they were joyfully married. Afterward, Irving worked at M. Backes & Sons Fireworks, followed by working for Revere Corp. of America. He was also very proud and fond of his work at the Northford Company 2 Volunteer Fire Department, to which he dedicated 60 years of service as both a member and an honorary member. Over the years, Irving also loved camping and boating with his family, snowmobiling in New Hampshire, and traveling to Florida with his wife.
Irving is remembered as a caring family man and an always supportive brother. He is survived by his two daughters, Cheryl Norrie (and husband Greg) and Donna King Valleau (and husband Matthew); sister Barbara Stone; grandsons, James and William Valleau; niece and nephews, Veronica and Fred Stone and Kevin (and wife Dorothy) Jordan; and many friends.
A memorial service for Irving will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church located at 1382 Middletown Avenue in Northford, directly followed by a graveside service at Northford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Northford Company 2 Volunteer Fire Department. B.C. Bailey Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with Irving’s care and final arrangements.
