William Woods Sr.

William C. Woods Sr., 90, of Madison, died peacefully April 5 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Mary Helen “Pat” Woods. Bill was born Jan. 19, 1933, in New Haven, son of the late Walter and Winifred McVey Woods.

He graduated from Boston University in 1954 and met his future wife of 60 years at Hammonasset State Park while celebrating the next day. After graduating, he worked as a staff member at Seward and Monde, Certified Public Accountants in New Haven. Then, during a stint in the building business, Bill took night classes at the University of Bridgeport to earn his master’s degree in education, all while helping Pat raise five children. Bill became a high school teacher in 1967. He taught business classes at Morgan High School and later at Guilford High School, where he was instrumental in starting an adult education program. He then started William C Woods & Company, Public Accountants in 1974 and was still doing tax returns in March of this year.

Bill is survived by his children: William (Dani) Woods Jr., John Woods, Peter (Michelle) Woods, and Marypat (John) Maloney, and his eight grandchildren, all of whom were raised in Madison and all of whom will miss their Pop Pop. He was predeceased by a son, Walter Woods, and his brother Norman Woods.

Bill and Pat hosted countless family dinners and pool parties, and they were extremely grateful their entire family was local. He was a member of the Madison Country Club for over 50 years and loved to play and watch golf. An avid sports fan, Bill was a season ticket holder of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Providence College Friars, Boston Breakers, and New Haven Ravens. He was a huge fan of the UConn women’s basketball team.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford, with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
