04/14/2023 11:01 AMOn April 2, Joan Lorraine (Raczkowski) Zaremba, after a brief illness, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Chester. Born in 1933, in New Britain, to the late Leon and Rose (Gutkowski) Raczkowski, she was a graduate of New Britain High School.
In 1964, she married the love of her life, Paul J. Zaremba. Together they built their home and raised their family in Deep River, where she and Paul spent the next 59 years. She worked for the New Britain Police Department as well as other jobs before becoming a homemaker.
Her family was her greatest joy and lifelong devotion. Joan, or “Baci” as her family affectionately called her, leaves her husband Paul; two daughters, Ellen Matthews (husband Steve) of Scarborough, Maine, and Marsha McGlynn (husband Jim) of Killingworth; five grandchildren: Dr. Nicholas McGlynn (wife Becca), Emily Winters (husband Jeff), Nolan and Jack Matthews, and Ella McGlynn. She also leaves behind her great-granddaughter, Grace Winters. She is predeceased by her parents, her brother Leon Raczkowski, as well as many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Proud to be Polish and a dedicated Catholic, she was generous throughout her life, donating to numerous charities and always supporting the “underdog” and the poor. She loved watching UConn basketball and the way Coach Geno motivated his girls. She enjoyed going for walks on the beach and visiting her daughter on the Maine coast.
Her life was celebrated on April 11, with visitation hours at Robinson, Wright, and Weymer Funeral Home in Centerbrook, followed by a funeral Mass at Saint Joseph’s Church in Chester. She was laid to rest at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery following her funeral Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Deep River Ambulance Company, 284 Elm Street, Deep River, CT.
