03/02/2023 09:42 AMSophie Loretta Giza, age 101, passed away peacefully on Feb. 17 at Aaron Manor in Chester. She was born in Deep River on May 13, 1921, the daughter of Ignatius and Victoria (Hajec) Giza.
Sophie was a lifelong resident of Deep River and a member of the Deep River High School, Class of 1939. She worked at the L. C. Doane Company building gliders and lighting for the United States government and was a waitress at the former Johnny Cake Inn, which is now the Copper Beach Inn in Ivoryton. She also worked at the former Monsanto Company in Deep River. She proudly was a past president and long-standing member of the Deep River Sixty Club. Sophie was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed crocheting and embroidery work. She was a communicant at Saint Joseph Church in Chester.
She is survived by her niece and godchild, Janice Proctor and her husband, Randy of Saint Clairsville, Ohio; niece, Sandra Twiss and her husband Steve of Hudson, Floorida; grand-nephew Bennett Koehler of Tokyo, Japan; nine other grand-nephews; and three grand-nieces. Sophie also leaves her very close friend, Sally Carlson Crowell, of Deep River.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, at Saint Joseph Church in Chester, with burial following in the Giza Family Lot in Saint Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sophie’s name to Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish, (Saint Joseph Church) 48 Middlesex Turnpike, Chester, CT 06412.
