Alice Appell Stopa
Alice Appell Stopa, 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Gladeview Healthcare in Old Saybrook on Jan. 30. Beloved wife of the late Andrew Stopa, she was born on April 8, 1930, in Old Saybrook, to the late Harold and Martha Molyneux Appell.
Alice went into private duty homecare in 1982 and took care of 75 people all around the shoreline. The best job every year for five years was going to Chatman, Massachusetts, on the Cape for the summer. Alice was a big Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching ice skating, Law & Order, and Dancing with the Stars. When her two sons, Larry and David, were young, they started a very popular group called the Stopa’s Band, which played all over the shoreline, and she very much enjoyed listening to their music at the different establishments. Most of all, she liked spending time with her family at her favorite place, The Courtyard in Old Saybrook, with four generations of family also enjoying their food.
Besides her late husband of 47 years, she is survived by one son Lawrence (Necia) Stopa of Colchester; two sisters, Jane DiMauro of Old Saybrook and Mary (Robert) Herel of Centerbrook; two grandchildren, Bethany Stopa and Laura Holcomb; and two great-grandchildren, Kaleigh and Connor. She was predeceased by her brothers, Wallace, Harold, and Warren Appell; one sister Betty Vincent; her son David Stopa; and her grandson John Stopa.
