01/26/2023 10:42 AMGerald Giammattei, 75, of East Haven, passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 20 at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was born Nov. 24, 1947, in New Haven, to Mario and Mabel (Giannotti) Giammattei.
Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Linda (DiMarzo) Giammattei; and two devoted children, Gerald Giammattei (Jessica) of Wallingford and Valerie Mendez (Hugo) of East Haven, along with five grandchildren he adored, Erin Giammattei, Patrick Giammattei, Elizabeth Giammattei, Gianna Mendez and Logan Mendez. He is also survived by his two sisters, Donna Giammattei of West Haven and Joyce Giammattei of Brookfield. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Giammattei.
Gerald served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War before getting a job at United Nuclear, where he met his loving wife, Linda. He then worked for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier for more than 30 years. Gerald spent retirement having breakfast with friends, taking trips to the casino, spending time with his adoring grandchildren, and watching his beloved Red Sox.
Family received friends on Jan. 24 at the Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home (Clancy Funeral Home), 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Jan. 25 in St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, 80 Taylor Ave., East Haven, with committal and U.S. Navy Military Honors to follow at East Lawn Cemetery in East Haven.
