Joan Lindert Brod
Joan Lindert Brod of Avon, formerly of Branford, died Dec. 21, at the age of 90. She leaves her husband, Geoffrey Brod: children: Mary Lindert (Neil Bangs), Patricia Dugan (Howard), Margaret Monti (Ralph), Jane Geiger (William), Timothy Lindert (Kathy), and Sarah Lindert; brother Tom Haley; and sister Roberta Love. She also leaves grandchildren: Anne Smith, Kate Anania, Laura Kohler, Sean and Kevin Lindert, Megan and Patrick Geiger, and Olivia and Eva Fiore; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Lindert: son Christopher Lindert: her parents, Francis and Eva Haley; and siblings, Mary Hebler, Pat Haley, and John Haley; and grandson John-Carlo Monti.
Joan was born in Kenmore, New York, graduated from the State University of New York Buffalo and taught second grade until her marriage. Joan was an avid duplicate bridge player. She taught bridge lessons for many years at the Branford Community Center and encouraged her students to bid and make grand slams whenever possible. Joan directed duplicate bridge games throughout Connecticut and achieved duplicate bridge Life Master status in 1979. She was also a skilled pianist, gardener, nature lover, and seamstress. There are many family photos of her children modeling her sewing creations – the Easter flower-petal hats are legendary. She was an accomplished baker; Joan passed on her skills to her children who prefer pies to birthday cakes and carry on the Christmas cookie gift tradition, if you are lucky enough to be on the recipient list. Joan loved dogs and had a passion for rescuing Dobermans and giving them a good home. She was a voracious reader and faithfully attended the programs at the Avon Free Public Library.
In lieu of flowers, please remember Joan with a gift in her memory to the Friends of the Avon Library, 281 Country Club Road, Avon, CT 06001 and feed the birds this winter.
