01/05/2023 09:47 AMDr. Albert J. Anderson, 92, of Old Saybrook, passed away Dec. 26. Albert, fondly known as Andy or Doc, was born to Albert Sr. and Isabel Olga Anderson on Sept. 2, 1930 in Derby.
He was a talented athlete who loved all sports; however, he excelled in football. After attending Ansonia High School and graduating from The Gunnery preparatory school in Washington, Andy began his dentistry studies at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Upon graduation from Dental School in 1955, Andy enlisted in the United States Navy and served two years aboard the USS Coral Sea as a Lieutenant in the Naval Dental Corps. After being honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1957, Andy found his home in Old Saybrook, where he opened his dental practice above “Joe’s Diner.” That same year Andy met the love of his life, Judith Edgecombe. They were married in 1958. In 1973, Doc’s practice outgrew his first location, so he moved to The Professional Building located directly across the street from the Firehouse in Old Saybrook. Andy’s practice remained there until his retirement.
Andy believed in public service to the community as was evident in his over 50 years of Rotary service. After his retirement, Andy served on the Old Saybrook Board of Education, Old Saybrook Republican Town Committee, and was the Old Saybrook Board of Education’s liaison to Project Learn in East Lyme.
He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Blackhall Golf Club for 40 years. You could always find Andy enjoying a cup of coffee at The Courtyard or Mirsinas Restaurant on any given Sunday. He adored his family, his community, and his friends.
Andy is predeceased by his wife Judy; and sisters, Marcia Boyer and Barbara Mathews. He is survived by his daughter Laurie Aholt (Michael) of Plains, Washington; and his son Peter Anderson (Suzan) of Old Saybrook. He has three grandchildren: Jacob, Carl and Sarah Anderson; and two great-grandchildren, MacKenzie and Matthew Anderson.
