Bruce Bell Greenfield


Bruce Bell Greenfield, 94, of Chester died Nov. 5 in Middletown. Bruce was born in Pittsford, New York on Nov. 23, 1927, to Horace and Elizabeth (Bell) Greenfield.

Bruce attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at age 17. He left RPI for two years to serve in the U.S. Navy. He then returned to RPI and graduated in 1951. Bruce had a long and successful career as a sales engineer, finally retiring when he was 80 years old.

Bruce was very active in the Old Saybrook community and served on many committees and contributed countless volunteer hours. He was a member of the Old Saybrook Exchange Club for many years, serving as president for several terms and engaged at the state and national levels.

Bruce was predeceased by his wife of almost 60 years Nancy Donegan Greenfield and his daughter Elizabeth Greenfield. He was also predeceased by his sister Margery Greenfield.

He is survived by his loving children, Mark Greenfield (Karen Mooney), Jane Nierstedt (Edward), Mara Kelley (James) and his son-in-law Charles Hyman.

In addition to his children, Bruce is survived by his grandchildren, Claire Hyman (Mark O’Neill), Catherine Hyman, Greg Hyman, Hannah Holland (Patrick), Julie Nierstedt (Matthew Bockhorst), Shannon Kelley, Graham Kelley (Caroline), and Audrey Jean-Guillaume (Evan). He is also survived by his brother Robert Greenfield of Baltimore, and his very dear friend Carol Kraner of Chester.

His family received relatives and friends on Nov. 9 in the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook. A funeral service was held Nov. 10 at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, 161 Main Street, Old Saybrook. Interment was at Cypress Cemetery.
