08/31/2022 10:30 AMNancy Millette, 90, on Aug. 29. Predeceased in 2004 by her husband Douglas, of 51 years, her son Douglas (2022), her parents, Lillian and Paul Gehring, and her sister, Joan Clarke. Born on Sept 4, 1931 in New York, Nancy graduated from Sewaneka High School in Floral Park, New York, and Adephi College, in 1953, where she met Doug. Married the day after graduation, they moved to Ohio for several years before settling in Connecticut. A move to a house they built in Sunrise in Guilford in 1963 lasted a lifetime, and Nancy was able to stay in the home she designed for almost the rest of her life.
She was the Director of the Guilford Housing Authority from 1977-’79 and 1982-1995, where she managed the town elderly housing, and she and Doug performed many silent acts of kindness over the years. Over the course of her life, she developed many artistic passions; they lasted for years, but only one at a time. Crewel embroidery, then knitting (everyone she ever loved has at least one homemade sweater, if not many!), then painting, then coloring, and always reading — many, many books. She was smart as a whip, spoke her mind, didn’t suffer fools, had an amazing artistic bent, and a terrific sense of humor, but most of all, loved her family. Her mouth was without filter, especially after a martini, and her candor was priceless, and loved. For those seeking a long life, the secrets are evidently 50 years of smoking, a martini every evening, and exercise consisting of a good brisk sit.
Special thanks go to the people at Transitions HospiceCare in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Beyonka Anderson, a very compassionate caregiver who was with us for the past three months.
Nancy is survived by the kids she loved so much, Susan Dephouse (Jan), Patricia Leete (Lawrence), Barbara Notte (Nicholas), and David Millette (Tracy). She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Mark MacDonald (Allison), Sydney Millette-Fulgencio (Hannah), Cassidy Millette, Joshua Leete (Leigh), Emily Leete (Chris), Sarah White (Alex), Nicholas Notte III, Katelyn Millette (Derek), and David Millette Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Riley and Taylor MacDonald, Sawyer Leete, Roman and Scarlett Millette, Alex Millette, and Keegan Neri.
