Richard “Dick” Cella, 94, of Madison, beloved husband of Annette DeVito Cella passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by his devoted wife and children on Nov. 2. Born July 13, 1927, in Wallingford, he was the son of Paul and Louise Forlini Cella.
Dick was a graduate of Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford. He was a star football player and was honored as Lineman of the Year. His other trophies were for his amazing tennis career. Dick honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy. Upon his return to civilian life, he founded R.L. Cella Mason Contractors, where he had a long and successful career and was highly respected in his profession as a master mason. Dick was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Wallingford Country Club and upon moving his family to Madison, he became a 40-year member of the Madison Country Club securing a hole-in-one on the par 3 second hole.
He was a major fan of old movies and loved listening and dancing to Frank Sinatra. Dick and Annette spent many winters in Florida, where they welcomed family and friends. They celebrated several anniversaries in Bermuda. They enjoyed many travels to Italy, France, Spain, and Greece, where they played golf on the Island of Corfu. Nothing pleased Dick more than being with his family, especially Paul and Caroline.
Dick is survived by the love of his life, Annette, and his children Richard Cella (Linda) of Orange, Maryellyn MacKinnel (Doak) of Guilford, and Patricia Burkett (Paul Sr.) of Wallingford. He leaves behind his six grandchildren to cherish his memory, Marina and Gabrielle Cella, Matthew and Meagan MacKinnel, and Paul and Caroline Burkett. He was predeceased by brothers Paul and David Cella. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Church of the Resurrection in Wallingford. Wallingford Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Burial with military honors will follow at St. John Cemetery in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made in Richard’s name to Orchard House, 421 Shore Drive, Branford, CT 06405.
