06/30/2021 12:00 AMLong-time Killingworth resident, Louise May Snyder Ferguson, peacefully went home to God on May 28, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept. 9, 1927, in Middletown, the second child and eldest daughter of the late Thomas Wilfred and Margaret Carling Snyder.
The family lived in Wethersfield and Rocky Hill before settling in Portland where she attended public schools. Upon graduation, she went to work at Sears Roebuck in Middletown where she met her future husband “Bob” and they were married Sept. 27, 1947. As newlyweds, they purchased a parcel of land in Killingworth and built the family homestead.
Louise was a member of the Congregational Church in Killingworth and was a charter member of the Wednesday Eves ladies’ group. She was kind and gentle with abundant patience, a natural caregiver, loved to read and play the piano and host holiday dinners. She loved gardening and taught her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren many things including an appreciation for the outdoors, the names of trees and flowers, to have a strong faith, to never judge anyone and to treat people with respect. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Louise is survived by her three loving daughters, Janet F. (Leonard) Summa of Madison, Laurie F. (Francis) Gagne of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Pamela F. (Charles) Peterson of Storrs. She was known as “Gam” to her four grandchildren, Peter and William Meglin and Sarah and Emmy Galbraith; and her seven great- grandchildren, Ross, Bailey and Emma Meglin, Elise von Duntz and Clover, Peyton (Lacy) and Forrest Schultz. Also survived by two sisters, Vivian S. (Walter) Dower of Pinehurst, N.C., and Roberta S. (Daniel) Scribner of Harrison, Maine; one brother Thomas C. Snyder of North Franklin, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Robert R. Ferguson; and two brothers, Randall E. and Ronald E. Snyder.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, 2021, at the Congregational Church in Killingworth, 273 Rt 81 Killingworth, followed by a reception at the family homestead in Killingworth. Interment will be private.
Donations in Louise’s name may be made to the Deacon’s Fund c/o the Congregational Church in Killingworth or honor her name by spending time in nature, adopting a houseplant, taking a walk in the woods or gathering your loved ones for a shared meal.
