Steven Dwight Potter, 52, of Guilford passed away peacefully on Aug. 30 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a courageous battle with head and neck cancer. He was born March 8, 1967, to David and Kathryn Potter in New Haven and is now joined with them. He graduated from Guilford High School in 1985. He leaves behind his sisters Debora Potter of Groton (Tom) and Tracy Potter Cook (Nigel). He is also survived by aunts and uncles Francis Post (Barbara) of Guilford, Maureen Post Littlefield (Rick) of Newington, and Barbara Post Hannon (Dave) of Litchfield; several cousins; and his beloved Aiko.
His cousin Claudia described him perfectly: “An incandescent soul, three words that to me describe the beautiful person he was and will always be. A multifaceted genius, a lover of words, a poet, music maker, prideful craftsman, gourmet chef du jour, at times, a force to be reckoned with.”
Steven will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family would like to thank the staff at Smilow Cancer Hospital in Guilford and New Haven and the Vitas staff for their care and compassion. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize all of the amazing nurses whose service and devotion touched our hearts.
A very special thank you to Barbara, Francis, and Maureen Post for their support during Steven’s journey.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Potter home, 125 North Mill Circle, Guilford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be to Closer to Free Fund, Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven, P.O. Box 1849, New Haven, CT 06508-9979.
