06/21/2018 12:00 AMGladys Hanford, 101, wife of the late Col. Samuel B. Hanford, passed away peacefully on June 11 in Old Saybrook. She was born in East Hartford on May 3, 1917, to Edith (Reid) and Francis W. Potter.
She moved to Old Saybrook, where she graduated from Old Saybrook schools. She was an Air Force wife for 25 years and volunteered as a Red Cross Grey Lady at various hospitals. After retirement she was very involved in the First Church of Christ (Congregational) of which she was a lifelong member. Gladys continued volunteering well into her 90’s.
She is survived by daughter Joan Hanford Casenelli of Brooklyn; son Stephen and Lane Hanford of Haddam; son Reid and Dana Hanford of Ivoryton; and adored grandchildren Jill Havunen, John Casenelli, Sarah Hanford, Nathan Hanford, Allison Hanford, Christine Hanford, and Bethany Hanford. She also leaves her equally adored great-grandchildren Serena Havunen, Kaitlyn Havunen, Emily Hanford, and Brigsley Boyle.
The exceptional care and concern demonstrated by all of the staff at Gladeview nursing home are greatly appreciated.
A service of remembrance and interment will be held at the First Church of Christ (Congregational), 366 Main St., Old Saybrook, CT 06475 on June 23 at 10:00 a.m. A small reception will be held after the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gladys Hanford’s memory may be made to your favorite charity.
