Marjorie (Midge) Gillie, 96, of Essex, and Jefferson, Maine, formerly of Scarsdale, New York, passed away on May 4. She was the wife of the late Robert B. Gillie.
She was a graduate of Skidmore College with a degree in languages. During World War II, she worked as a translator for the FBI. She was a nurse’s aide and volunteer at the White Plains Hospital (New York) for forty-five years, and a life member of the Scarsdale Woman’s Club and White Plains Hospital Auxiliary, also serving on the boards. She was a past president of the Skidmore College Club of Westchester, and a board member of the Council of Women’s College Clubs. She was a member of the Scarsdale (NY) Golf Club and the Skytop (PA) Club. An avid horse woman, she was for many years a member of the Greenwich Riding and Trails Association. Mrs. Gillie belonged to the Hitchcock Presbyterian Church of Scarsdale.
Midge was always a generous woman and a gracious host with attention to detail, organizing events around annual family and holiday occasions. She loved both traveling the world and quiet time at the family cottage on Damariscotta Lake, Maine. Midge was an accomplished piano player, able to improvise the songbook standards on request and lift spirits effortlessly. She was also an animal lover and owner of many rescued dogs over the years.
She is survived by her son Dr. R. Bruce Gillie of Westerly, Rhode Island, and two grandchildren, Bowen and Anne; and son Brian Gillie of Guilford. Services will be private.
