08/24/2017 12:00 AMThomas E. Carleton of Branford died Aug. 15 at St. Raphael’s Hospital. He was the son of the late Dana B. Carleton and the late Rebecca K. Carleton. Tom was born April 27, 1945, in Trenton, New Jersey, where he spent his childhood summering in Maine with his family.
Tom is survived by his brother David Carleton of North Haven; his brother Richard Carleton of Branford; his sister-in-law Beryl Meiner; and his nephew Max Carleton (fiancée Tina Abate) of Portland, Oregon. He also leaves many friends, including Patricia Mack and Catherine Ferucci, with whom he shared many adventures, and who will miss the absolute joy of his company.
Tom attended Hartwick College in New York and graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a B.A. in economics. He worked at Travelers and Aetna as a computer programmer, and spent the last 25 years of his career as a software specialist for SNET. Tom was an avid guitarist, playing in rock bands in the 1960’s. He loved concerts, and attended Woodstock and several of the Newport Folk Festivals. Tom had many athletic interests. He participated in several tennis leagues. He went on 50-mile bike tours. He loved to sail. He had a sailboat moored at the New Haven Yacht Club, where he served as both secretary and president. He also crewed for other sailors on trips up and down the East Coast. He enjoyed skiing, both in New England and out west. He counted hiking and kayaking among his athletic pursuits. Tom enjoyed traveling, hiking, and biking through Europe. Tom was passionate about photography, architecture, gardening, cooking, and entertaining.
A memorial visitation was held Aug. 21 at W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 N. Main St., Branford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shoreline Greenway Trail, Box 148, Branford, CT 06405. Please visit his online memorial at www.wsclancy.com.
