Westport and Madison

Emil Blakely Bernadino (Dino) Nebel, blaster, actor, chef, and beloved husband, father, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, passed away on Oct. 29.

Dino was born on June 4, 1960, in New Haven, to Patricia Stewart and Emil Corrado Nebel, and grew up near his sculptor-grandfather’s stone studio on Roseville Road in Westport. He graduated from Staples High School in 1978, played ice hockey, and went on to box in the Golden Gloves competition. He was a cook at the Arrow Restaurant, DeRosa’s Restaurant, the Nisticos Red Barn, Dino’s Diner, and the Brick Restaurant.

He moved to Rangeley, Maine, in 1981 to be the chef at the Mountain Inn, where his brother Chris was part owner. There he met Sara Drought, also a Staples graduate, and they married in 1984 after moving back to Westport.

Dino took acting classes with Al Pia at Silverman Guild in New Canaan, and went on to act in plays at the Ethel Kweskin Sterling Barn Theater and in New York City off-off-Broadway. He was an extra in four Saturday Night Live skits, was in New York Undercover, and acted with Jamie Farr in the musical South Pacific at the Darien Dinner Theater.

Along the way Dino and Sara had three children, James Blakely, Corrado Carlson, and Franceska Nereise. Dino was always involved in his children’s lives and coached hockey for many years.

Dino is survived by his wife Sara; his three children, Blake, Cory, and Franki; brother Chris; sister Victoria; nephew Albie; and his aunt, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Memorial Service is planned for Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Church in Westport, 10 Lyons Plains Rd. Flowers may be sent to the Unitarian Church and donations in his honor are gratefully accepted at the Dino Nebel Memorial Fund for his family at http://www.gofundme.com/dinofund.
