Old Saybrook

Shirley Sheffield Mislick of Old Saybrook passed away peacefully in her home on Oct. 26 at age 97. Born in Old Saybrook to Ida Main and Lucien M. Sheffield, Shirley lived most of her life in Deep River after marrying Walter E. Mislick in 1945. Mr. Mislick already had two children, Judith and Gary, by his first wife Phebe Sheffield (her sister), who died in 1944. Together Walter and Shirley had two boys, Jeffrey and Randolph.

Shirley was a graduate of Old Saybrook High School, Bryant College, and in 1969 graduated from Connecticut College in New London with a BA in English. She and Walter spent most winters in Oldsmar, Florida, then the Villages, and in their final winter years, Ocala, Florida. Her passion was ensuring the proper use of English in everyday life. She often tutored foreign students in English as a second language, which also helped them to apply for citizenship.

She is predeceased by her sister Phebe, a half-sister, Katherine Kane, and her husband Walter. She leaves four children and spouses, Judith Gebhard of Ocala, Florida; Gary and Jody Mislick of Deep River/Sebastian, Florida; Jeffrey and Penny Mislick of Boulder Creek, California; Randolph and Kelley Mislick of Cascade Lockes, Oregon; three grandchildren, Gary Mislick, Curt Mislick, and Ginny Mislick King; and a great-grandchild, Carson Mislick.

The Mislick Family would like to thank her wonderful and loving home health care aides and the Vitas Hospice staff who cared for Shirley, affording her the opportunity to remain in the comfort of her home until the very end.

As per her wishes, there will be no formal funeral. A private family celebration of life and burial will be held at Cypress Cemetery, Saybrook Point. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her name to the Deep River Historical Society or the local SPCA.
