James R. Bates of Branford died Aug. 15 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Jim was born June 12, 1965, in Norwalk, son of Joan Daniels Bates of Wallingford and the late Robert N. Bates.

He worked for Ricoh USA in Milford as a senior technician for 24 years. He enjoyed fine wines, which helped him with his part-time job at Gabel’s Wine Shop in Branford. He was a volunteer firefighter with M.P. Rice Co. 2, Branford Fire Department.

Jim is survived by his children Bethany A. Bates and Tyler R. Bates, and their mother Mary Ann Bates of Branford; his sisters Lynda Bates-Stepe of Commack, New York, and Lorraine Mayer of Johnsonville, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Louise Ferraiuolo.

Relatives and friends called Aug. 21, and attended a funeral service Aug. 22 at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St., Branford. Burial followed in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Dr., Wallingford, CT 06492.
