North Haven and Hallendale Beach, Florida

John Martin Maher, Sr., of North Haven and Hallendale Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 2. He was 82. A native of New Haven, he was born Sept. 16, 1933, and grew up in a large family in the Elm City. He served in the U.S. Navy and then entered the New Haven Department of Police Services, where he rose through the ranks, starting as a patrolman and retiring after 31 years at the rank of police commander of Investigative Services. He then was vice president of operations and general manager of Chapel Square of New Haven, Inc.

Mr. Maher, known to everyone as “Jack,” was married for 57 years to Anna Marie (Crisci), who survives him. Their three children, Sharon M. Crosbie (Michael), John M. Maher, Jr. (Cheryl), and Linda Torrey (Richard) are all residents of Connecticut. His eight grandchildren include Sean Crosbie (Katie Broendel); Christopher Crosbie; Lauren Maher; Ian Torrey; Brigit Rose Crosbie; Jaina Maher; Maxwell Torrey; and Cooper Torrey. He is survived by a sister, Carol Ann Patz (Henry), and predeceased by six siblings, James, Helen Brandt, Betty Clark, Joan Mason, his twin Shirley Perrotti, and Dorothy Lorusso. He is the uncle of Geraldine Terrill along with many other devoted nieces and nephews. His family is thankful for Jack’s many loyal friends who expressed their love and fellowship. He was also a past president of the Knights of St. Patrick in New Haven and a devoted Yankees fan.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on June 6 at St. Mary’s Church in Branford. Burial followed in St. Agnes Cemetery in Branford. Friends called June 5 at the W.S.
