12/23/2015 11:00 PMRobert W. Sommo Sr., 76, passed away suddenly on Dec. 19 surrounded by his family and many treasured friends. He was born June 21, 1939, in New Haven, son of the late Louise and Charles Sommo.
Bob was a veteran of the armed forces. He loved his country and supported veterans in many ways. Bob was very active in sports all his life. He recently loved playing golf at Sleeping Giant Golf Course. He also enjoyed basketball with his friends. In his younger years he was an avid softball player and many of the friends he made then remain today. His greatest gift was his unconditional love for his family. They were his life. We can never put into words the gentle way that he made everyone around him feel loved.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth M. Sommo; daughter Teresa Louise Sommo; son Robert W. Sommo, Jr.; son-in-law George Billis; and his beloved grandchildren Carly, Olivia, Alexios, and Aristides. He is also survived by his sister Theresa Cimino, brothers Anthony Sommo and Charles Sommo, Jr.; sister-in-law Lucy Sommo; and sister-in-law Peggy Sommo. He is predeceased by his brother Louis Sommo, brother-in-law Pat Cimino, and sister-in-law Marie Sommo. Bob had special heart connections with the many nieces and nephews who were an important part of his life.
We are especially grateful to the ministers of First Church, Sarah Verasco and Ginger Brasher-Cunningham. Their gentle spiritual gifts of love and support helped us feel and know God’s presence during this difficult time.
There will be a celebration of Bob’s life at the First Congregational Church on the green in Guilford on Dec. 26 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Meals on Wheels, 301 State St., Ste. #200, Guilford, CT 06437.
