Frederick Paul Gavigan, 83, of East Haven, passed away Aug. 2 at his home. He was the husband of Matilda Marelli Gavigan for 60 years. Paul was born in New Haven on Aug. 9, 1931, the youngest of seven children of the late Edward and Mary Dickinson Gavigan.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War and an officer in the New Haven Police Department for 26 years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children Cindie (David) Petersen of Branford; Paul (Louise) Gavigan of East Haven; and Robert (Kathleen) Gavigan of Branford. He left eight grandchildren, Kara, Casey, Sam, and Sophia Gavigan of East Haven, Dana and Bradley Petersen of Branford, and Brianna and Michaela Gavigan of Branford. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Santillo and Elizabeth O’Brien. He was predeceased by his brothers Edward, Milton, and Robert Gavigan, and his sister Eleanor Curran.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Aug. 7 at St. Vincent de Paul Church. Interment with full military honors followed at St. Lawrence Cemetery.
