05/27/2015 12:00 AMMarcus A. Nowakowski, 63, of Old Saybrook, passed peacefully with his beloved wife and family by his side on May 23, after suffering from a sudden cardiac episode the week prior.
Born to the late Leon and Helena (Lassler) Nowakowski on Aug. 6, 1951, in Yonkers, New York, Mark went on to graduate from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1969, receive his B.S. in chemistry from Fordham University, and earn a Ph.D. in chemistry from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Mark met and married his wife during his postdoctoral studies in Lodz, Poland, in 1980, and returned to the United States shortly thereafter, eventually beginning a 17-year career with Pfizer and settling in Old Saybrook, where he and his wife made their lovely home of 19 years. An avid outdoor and nature enthusiast, Mark enjoyed sailboat racing, trolling around on the Connecticut River in his boat, skiing, bicycling, photography, and traveling.
Mark is preceded in death by his sister Grazyna, and survived by his loving wife of 35 years Jolanta (Ludczak), brother Stan and Stan’s wife Carol (Haverkamp), and nieces Aimee Simpson and Karolina Rudnicka. Mark’s adventurous, kind, and humorous spirit will be missed by all.
A celebration of Mark’s life will be held at the Essex Yacht Club, 13 Novelty Ln., Essex, CT 06426, on May 28 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Contributions in Mark’s name should be made to the American Heart Association by visiting www.donatenow.heart.org.
