James Burgh, 90, East Haven


James Burgh, 90, of East Haven, passed away July 11. He was born July 8, 1924, in Hamden to Frederick and Delia (Farrell) Burgh.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his son Robert Burgh (companion of Judy Torre of East Haven); his granddaughter Mellissa Burgh; his brothers Frederick, Joseph, and Donald Burgh; and his sisters Edna Kovalski, Margarete Bellmore, Betty Patton, and Jean Lawlor.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary (Rahl) Burgh; his children James Burgh (Pam) of East Haven; Roger Burgh (Marcy) of Hamden; Sgt. NHPD Dennis Burgh (Helene) of Northford; Janice Schmidt (David) of East Haven; David Burgh (Mary Nelle) of East Haven; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Raymond Burgh (Natalie), of Venice, Florida.

He was a former member of Teamsters Union Local 443 and later worked at Yale University in maintenance. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, serving on the USS Texas; he saw action when the battleship held beaches in the North African campaign and the Normandy landings before being transferred to the Pacific Theater. He also saw action in late 1944 when the USS Texas provided naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was also in the Battle of Midway.

Family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. July 16 at the Clancy Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven, with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Church, East Haven.
