Audrey S. Ely, 84, Deep River


Audrey S. Ely, age 84, a long-time resident of Deep River, passed away at her residence on April 27 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in New York City on October 6, 1929, the daughter of Arthur and Dorothea (Scallia) Streit.

Audrey graduated as a member of the Class of 1947 at Deep River High School and had a long career as a secretary at Becket Academy in East Haddam for ten years and at the Brian House in Chester for thirty years, after which she retired in 2013. Audrey was a member of the Deep River Historical Society and did charitable work on behalf of the March of Dimes. She enjoyed working in her yard and antiquing. She was a communicant at Saint Joseph’s Church in Chester. Audrey will be forever remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her children, daughter Robin J. Ely of Boston, Massachusetts; sons Peter S. Ely of Pike, New Hampshire, and Jon P. Ely of Deep River; her grandchildren Francesca Ely-Spence of Boston, Massachusetts, and Travis Scott of Dunnellon, Florida; her sister Beverly Simons of Fresno, California; and her brother Arthur Streit of Milford. She also leaves her former husband John P. Ely of West Haven and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St. in Centerbrook on April 30 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on May 1 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Joseph’s Church, 48 Middlesex Ave., in Chester. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Audrey’s name to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396.
