Alfred J. Jessey, 90, (Ret. NHFD), Branford
Alfred J. Jessey, (Ret. NHFD), of Branford, died April 24 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Horak Jessey. Mr. Jessey was born March 20, 1924, in New Haven, son of the late Alfred and Catherine Flynn Jessey.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a New Haven Fireman for 32 years, retiring in 1984. During his career, he was assigned to Hook & Ladder No. 1 at Central Station, then Hook & Ladder No. 6, Engine Co. No. 17 in Fair Haven Heights, and he ended his career with NHFD at Engine Co. No. 16 in Morris Cove. He was very active with New Haven Firefighters Local No. 825, serving as vice-president for many years and also on the Executive Board and the Grievance Committee. After retiring from the NHFD, he served as a sheriff in New Haven. Al was a member of American Legion Post 132 in New Haven, the Irish-American Community Center, and also was an avid golfer.
He is survived by his children Alan (Fatima) Jessey of Shelton, Patricia A. Jessey of Branford, Joann (Frank) Lewis of New Hampshire, Deidre (Mark) Albino of Killingworth, Susan (Matthew) Gavano of Virginia, and Michael (Lucille) Jessey of East Haven; his sisters Mary Heath of Madison and Kathy Stomboli of Florida; eleven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers James, Francis, and Harold Jessey.
His funeral will leave the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St., Branford, April 28 at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial in St. Mary Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial, with military honors, will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford.
