James Phillip Hoyt, 68

James P. Hoyt, 68, of Clinton, died peacefully at home on July 2 after an 11-year battle with kidney cancer. He was the amazing, loving husband of 47 years to Holly Heberling Hoyt. Jim was born in Bridgeport on Sept. 30, 1944 and grew up in Stamford. He had lived in Clinton for the past 41 years. Jim owned a Pepperidge Farm Cookie franchise for many years and was known to all the local kids as “The Cookie Man.” The past 20 years, he enjoyed semi-retirement with his beef jerky business.

Holly and Jim met at the University of Connecticut and were avid UConn basketball fans. They enjoyed going to four women’s Final Four Championship games. Jim’s favorite pastime was spending time with friends and family. He was an active member of the community, involved in the Clinton Lion’s Club, Zoning Board of Appeals, and a longtime member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational, serving on the Diaconate, Finance, and Nominating committees.

Jim is survived by his son Todd Hoyt, his wife Cathy, and grandchildren Hayley and Harrison of Carbondale, Colorado, and by his daughter Heather O’Toole, her husband Patrick, and grandchildren Cailin, Declan, and Teague of Malverne, New York. He is also survived by his brother Peter Hoyt of Bradenton, Florida and Winifred Schroeder of Bradenton, Florida.

Funeral services were held July 6 at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, in Clinton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to The First Church of Christ, Congregational, or the American Cancer Society. The Swan Funeral Home, Clinton, was in charge of arrangements.
