Elizabeth V. (Betty) Kingsbury, 84, Guilford

Betty Kingsbury, 84, of Guilford, died peacefully on May 18, surrounded by her family. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late Frederick J. (John) Kingsbury. Betty was born in Mt. Vernon, New York, the only child of the late William Poulson Vestey and Helen Coho Vestey. She enjoyed a happy childhood in a wonderful neighborhood in Bronxville, New York, attending local schools and graduating from Southern Seminary junior college in Buena Vista, Virginia, with a major in home economics.

As a child Betty spent summers at her maternal grandparent’s family cottage in Sachem’s Head, Guilford, and there she grew to love the place she would eventually call her permanent home. In 1951, she married John Kingsbury and they built a home there that became the center of her life.

Betty was a devoted wife and mother who loved nature, art, music, and getting her hands in the dirt of her beautiful gardens. She made sure her children learned the joy of simple pleasures: fishing, ping-pong (she was an ace player), rowing, wiffle ball, ice-skating, and badminton.

She and John, married almost 60 years, loved spending time with family and friends and vacationing in Maine and Florida. She was loved for her down-to-earth nature, her sense of humor, and her kindness to all.

Her family gives special thanks to her devoted and loving caregivers, Frances, Alfhild, Carmen, Pat, and Chris, and all of the staff at Peregrine’s Landing in Clinton.

She is survived by her adoring children, son John Kingsbury, daughter Libby Kingsbury, and daughter-in-law Kitty Kingsbury. She is also survived by two beautiful granddaughters, Holly Kingsbury and Lydia Kingsbury, both of Denver, Colorado. In addition, she is survived by a brother-in-law, Larry Kingsbury of Chatham, Massachusetts, a dear sister-in-law, Kasha Kingsbury of Guilford, and their children, Jennifer Bogosian and Suzanne Kingsbury, as well as two nephews, Thomas Crocker and Stephen Fisher, and a niece, Kim McVay.

A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 122 Broad St., Guilford, on Friday, May 24, at 11:30 a.m.  Burial will be held privately.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, CT Chapter, 2075 Silas Deane Hwy, Suite 100, Rocky Hill, CT 06067, or call an old friend for a good, long chat.  The Guilford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
