02/25/2013 10:00 AMJohn J. Fleming, Jr., 87, of North Branford, died on Feb. 20 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of the late Enid Wright Fleming. Mr. Fleming was born in Meriden on June 5, 1925, son of the late John and Mary O’Donnell Fleming. He entered the U.S. Navy during World War II and served with the Third and Seventh Beach Battalion during the Omaha Beach Invasion and the Battle of Iwo Jima. He had also worked as a line foreman and tree expert with Northeast Utilities for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Fleming was a well known artist and sculptor and a published poet. In addition, he was an avid golfer and volunteered for many years at the Greater Hartford Open.
He is survived by two sons, Jack Fleming and his wife Kate of Northford and Robert Fleming and his wife Debbie of Tunbridge, Vermont; two daughters, Patty Ann Lisi and her husband Joe of Coventry, Rhode Island, and Gail Jones and her husband Art of Guilford; his brother Thomas Fleming of Wethersfield; nine grandchildren, Matt, Brent, Josh, Chelsey , Jay, Jerry, Shannon, Jen, and Ryan; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Eileen Cartier.
His funeral procession will leave the Keenan Funeral Home, 330 Notch Hill Rd., (Rte. 22 South at Rte 80.), North Branford, on Monday, Feb. 25, at 9 a.m., followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m., at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, at the funeral home.
