Helen V. (Chicosky) Yatchyshyn, 91, of Huntington, New York, died on Jan. 31 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Stanley and Sophie (Kovalesky) Chicosky and the beloved wife of the late Michael Yatchyshyn. Helen was born and lived much of her life surrounded by family and friends in Manhasset, New York, later moving to beautiful Essex, Connecticut, where she enjoyed life for 26 wonderful years.

Helen had worked for many years at the beautiful Paley Estate in Manhasset, New York, and enthusiastically belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Manhasset Lakeville Fire Department No. 2.  She was well known for her gardening skills and talent for flower arranging. Helen enjoyed all of nature, especially bird watching, and was passionate about the Mets, the “girls” – UCONN basketball team, and football. She also enjoyed traveling to new places and visiting casinos from time to time. In addition, she spent many hours antiquing, coin and stamp collecting, and was an avid card player.

In her later life, Helen returned to Long Island to be closer to her daughter.

Helen is survived by her beloved daughter, Valerie J. Meszaros and husband Lajos of Huntington, New York; her daughter-in-law Meredith Young of Birmingham, Alabama; her four grandchildren, David Young, Kirsten Holland and her husband Gordon, Patrick Young, and Matthew Meszaros; her sister-in-law Irene Chicosky of Tellico Plains, Tennessee; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Michael E. Young; and her siblings, Chester Chicosky, Stella Schulman, Lottie Kushay, Benjamin Chicosky, Irene Chicosky, and Wanda Harton.

Her funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at St. Joseph’s Church, Middlesex Ave., Chester, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Westbrook. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Cancer Society, or to a favorite charity of the donor’s choice.
