02/13/2013 01:00 PMGuy P. Merola, 94, of Pool Rd., North Haven, died on Jan. 30 at the VAMC in West Haven. He was the beloved husband of 67 years to Pearl Knop Merola. Guy was born in Hamden on Dec. 12, 1918, son of the late Dominic and Mary Monica Merola. He served his country faithfully in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon and the American and European Theatre Campaign Ribbons.
Guy had been the owner and operator of the former Cheshire Sports Shop. He was also a member and “Man of the Year” of the Hamden Italian-American Club and a member of the Wallingford Country Club.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Janice Merola; his sister Lucy Heath; his brother Leonard Merola; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by five siblings, Antoinette LaBonia, Nicholas P. Merola, Sr., Matrona “Em” Carafano, and Blair and Paul Merola.
Funeral services were private. There were no visiting hours. The North Haven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
