Martha DeGrand, 81, of Guilford, the wife of 25 years to Francis DeGrand, died peacefully at home on Dec.12. During the last month, Martha had been surrounded by the love and care of family and close friends. She was born on Sept. 15, 1931 in Boston, Massachusetts, daughter of Walter and Lucia Bridges. Martha’s personality kept everyone at ease; she had been described as a rare combination of ‘a real piece of work’ and ‘a touch of class.’ Martha will be remembered for many reasons, not the least of which was her sense of humor and selfless nature.

Besides her husband, she is survived her daughter Nancy Ashcroft; two sons, Robert Silverstein and his wife Eunice Froeliger and Richard Silverstein; and five grandchildren, Molly Ashcroft, Tess Ashcroft, Nathan Ashcroft, Will Ashcroft, and Michael Silverstein. She is also survived by her two brothers, Richard Bridges and his wife Elizabeth and Robert Bridges and his wife Laine, as well as many nephews, nieces, and close friends.

At Martha’s request, there will be no visiting hours or memorial service.
