Margaret (“Marge”) Szirbik Smith Jones, 93, Guilford


Margaret (“Marge”) Szirbik Smith Jones, 93, of Guilford, died peacefully on Nov. 10 at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford. She was the wife of the late Robert (Bob) Jones and the late Harry Smith, her first husband.  Marge was born in the Westville section of New Haven on Sept. 5, 1919, daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Farago Szirbik. She attended schools in New Haven and was a graduate of the original Hillhouse High School. Before retiring she was employed at Miles Laboratories, now The Bayer Company. Marge was also a communicant at St. George Church in Guilford.

Marge’s main interest was her loving family. In addition, she had many hobbies, such as gardening, sewing, and crafts. Marge grew beautiful flowers and canned many vegetables from her garden. She also loved to cook and bake for her family. Her children and loving family were always close to her heart.

She is survived by two sons, Paul Robert Jones and his wife Madelyn of Killingworth, and Dr. Harry William Smith and his wife Janice of Princeton, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Jones, Robert Michael Jones, Kristen Smith Saidla, and Matthew Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Rebecca, Olivia, and Molly. She is also survived by a sister, June Verab of Bethany, and many nieces, nephews, and very close friends. She was predeceased by five sisters, Elizabeth Schetzel, Jeanne Clark, Alice Mulvey, Rose Harrison, and Irene Bacon, and seven brothers, Stephen, George, Victor, Leslie, Alexander, Joseph, and William (Bill) Szirbik.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. George Church, 33 Whitfield St., Guilford, on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 11:30 a.m., followed by burial in Alder Brook Cemetery, Boston St., Guilford.  Friends may call prior to the mass on Wednesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford.  Donations may be made in her memory to the Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405.  To share a memory or leave a message of condolence for the family, please visit: www.GuilfordFuneralHome.com.
