Lois Barnes Hubbell, 94, Old Saybrook
Lois Barnes Hubbell, 94, of Old Saybrook, died peacefully at home on Oct. 25. She was the wife of the late Edward P. Hubbell, her first husband, who predeceased her 1994, and her second husband, the late Paul E. Reed, who predeceased her in 2002. Lois was born in Yalesville on March 30, 1918, daughter of the late Norman and Ruth Barnes. She attended Wallingford High School and graduated from the Women's College of University of North Carolina in Greensboro where she focused on science and art. She shared these interests with her family and friends, especially in the woods of the Adirondacks and in her watercolor paintings.
Before moving to Old Saybrook, Lois had been a long time resident of Guilford. She volunteered at the Public Library and the Guilford Art Center, and she served as a Deaconess at the First Congregational Church of Guilford. More recently, she attended Christ Chapel in North Madison with her daughter's family.
Lois married her second husband, Paul E. Reed, in 2001, and she continued to enjoy time spent with Paul's family, Suzanne Reed, Lonnie Reed, Parker Wise, and their children and grandchildren, after Paul's death in 2002.
The Hubbell Family extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this time.
Lois is survived by her two siblings, Florence Maher of Ithaca, New York, and Norman Barnes with his wife Betty of Wallingford. She will be greatly missed by her three children and their families, Judy Hubbell and her husband John of San Francisco, California, Jim Hubbell and his wife Marlene of Goldsboro, North Carolina, and Wendy H Wilke and her husband Michael of Old Saybrook. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her indomitable spirit. Besides her first and second husband, she was predeceased by her grandson Christopher Wilke in 1982.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Christ Chapel, 1185 Durham Rd., North Madison.
