11/05/2012 01:00 PMRichard Caliendo, 83, of Hamden, died peacefully on Nov. 2 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the beloved husband of 52 years to Phyllis Vannicola Caliendo. Richard was born in New Haven on Jan. 13, 1929, son of the late Louis and Madeline Lanzilli Caliendo. He was a talented and well-known barber all of his life in the New Haven and Hamden areas, and he continued working until the time of his death. Richard was the owner and operator of the former Caliendo’s Hair Styling of Hamden. A sports enthusiast, he was an avid Detroit Tiger’s fan, having persuaded the rest of his family to be the same.
Richard had a wonderful sense of humor. He truly loved people and was always there to lend an open ear or a hand, and people always loved to reciprocate. A loving, forgiving, peacemaking man, he will truly be missed.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his beloved children, Terry Troisi of East Haven and Gino R. Caliendo of Hamden; four grandchildren, to whom he was devoted, Johnny, Jenna, and Anthony Mitrano, and Mikey Troisi; and his sister, Gloria Orser of Hamden. He was predeceased by three brothers, Eugene, Jerry, and Robert Caliendo.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven, on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 9:15 a.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Ascension at 10 a.m., followed by burial in All Saints Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Caliendo Grandchildren’s Education Fund through the funeral director. www.northhavenfuneral.com
