Helen Miriam (Berg) Simon, 87, Westbrook and Old Saybrook
Helen Miriam (Berg) Simon, 87, of Westbrook and Old Saybrook, died peacefully on Sept. 13. Helen was born on April 10, 1925, daughter of Finnish immigrants, the late Oscar and Alina Berg (Vuotilainen), formerly of the Bronx, New York, and Mansfield Center. She had worked for the Bowery Savings Bank and later for the Nassau County Highway Patrol, where she was nicknamed “Highway Helen.” Helen was married for 32 years and lived in East Meadow, New York, with her husband, the late Lou Simon, and retired in Connecticut to be closer to her children. She enjoyed time with the Red Hat Society.
She is survived by her children, Gail Simon and Heidi Hunter of East Haven, Marcia Simon and grandson Erik Simon Vuoritie of Westbrook, and David Simon and Louise Ference-Simon of Mansfield Center. She is also survived by her special friend, Joseph Dell ‘Aquila of Garden City Park, New York, and her siblings Ruth Ventre of Winter Haven, Florida, and John and Carmen Berg of Mansfield Center.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St., Centerbrook, followed by a gathering of friends and family at Marcia and Erik’s home.
