09/19/2012 04:30 PMBetty Ruth Shiller of Old Saybrook died on Sept. 17 at her home. She was the only child of the late Winnie Price, formerly of Jacksboro and Garland Texas, and later Houston, Texas, and the late John S. Price. She completed high school in Houston, Texas, and then attended Rice University in the pre-med program. She married William R. Shiller in 1954 and served as a U.S. Navy wife in many duty stations, the last being at the submarine base in Groton. She had been active in the Gales Ferry United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, and she also worked as the office manager in her husband’s dental practice.
Later, she attended Connecticut College, graduating cum laude with a degree in sociology. She then worked and lived in Old Saybrook for the last 30 years of her life, enjoying her children, grandchildren, and friends. She was active in the First Congregational Church of Old Saybrook, where she served as a deacon.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Marcella and Tim Ruland of Columbia, Maryland, Phyllis and Clark Farley of Hope Valley, Rhode Island, and Stephen and Kelly Shiller of Littleton, Colorado. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Dustin and Melanie Shiller of Littleton, Colorado.
A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Middlesex Hospice Homecare, 28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457.
