Vincent P. (Jim) Martone, 91, Branford

Vincent P. (Jim) Martone, 91, of Branford, died peacefully in his sleep on May 13 with his loving daughter by his side. He courageously overcame a year of medical challenges and learned to walk again at age 90 after the amputation of both his legs. Jim was the beloved husband of the late Marian Ambrulevich Martone. He was born on Jan. 17, 1921 in Naples, Italy, son of the late Nunzio and Anna La Mura Martone. He came to Branford with his parents when he was an infant and, after graduating from Branford High School, served proudly in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator with the 380th 531st Bomb Squadron and saw combat in the Southern Pacific.

Jim was a founding member of the International Maintenance Institute's Fairfield County Chapter. He spent his career in maintenance supervision and production and in facilities management, and had worked as a plant engineer for Borden Foods, retiring from the America Apparel Group as facilities manager in 1998 to become the primary caregiver for his wife after her near fatal stroke. Like his late wife, Jim put family first.

An avid fisherman and former boater, Jim was a senior member of the Branford Yacht Club and a communicant of St. Mary Church, where he previously served as an usher.

He is survived by his daughter, Marian F. Martone of Branford, and two brothers-in-law, John T. Ambrulevich and his wife Almeda King of Durham, New Hampshire, and Joseph D. Ambrulevich and his wife Brenda of Walnut Creek, California.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, May 18, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary Church, 731 Main St., Branford. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford. Calling hours will be private. Contributions in Jim’s memory may be made to the Vincent P. Martone Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Deborah Wright, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, 70 Audubon St., New Haven, CT 06510.
