Howard W. Shoemaker, 79, Guilford


Howard W. Shoemaker, 79, a resident Guilford for 31 years, died April 10 at the Connecticut Hospice, Branford. He was the beloved husband of Bernice Conkling Shoemaker. Mr. Shoemaker was born on June 18, 1932 in Floral Park, New York, son of the late Percy and Jennie White Shoemaker. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Yale University while on scholarships. He was an enthusiastic Yale football fan.

Mr. Shoemaker worked for Douglas Orr, deCossey, Winder & Associates, and Kosinski Associates. As an architect, he helped design the Air Rights Garage, Knights of Columbus Museum, and the Mt. Ascutney condominiums. He was also an avid painter of watercolors.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his beloved sons, Bruce and Douglas Shoemaker. He was the proud grandfather of Daniel, Sarah and Lauren Shoemaker. He is also survived by two daughters-in-law, Sharon Shoemaker and Kim Shoemaker, and his sister, Jean Seal. He was predeceased by his son, Russell Shoemaker, and his brother, Kensel Shoemaker.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 14, at 1 p.m., at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford. Friends may call prior to service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Burial will be private.
