04/13/2012 12:00 AMEdward George Owen, 82, of Branford, died peacefully at home on April 8. He was born in Clark’s Summit, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 7, 1929, son of the late George and Helen (Snyder) Owen. Ed’s family moved to Connecticut about 1940, and Ed attended East Haven High School and was on the football team.
At the age of 16, Ed lied about his age in order to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1946, he served as a Marine photographer in Hsin Ho, China. Re-enlisting in 1950, he volunteered for Amphibious Reconnaissance so that he could serve in Korea.
In the ‘60s Ed owned The TeePee, a camping and hunting store. He later worked in the Personnel Department of Geometric Tool in New Haven, where he also became a tool and die machinist. In his retirement years, Ed volunteered as a driver for Branford Medical Transportation, then worked part-time as a gate attendant at Foote Park. He spent many years writing a war novel.
Ed loved camping and treasured his experience hiking through Scotland in the ‘70s. In addition, he enjoyed a good joke and loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving daughters and their husbands, Cynthia and William Kobak of Guilford and Lori and Fergus Mooney of Warren, New Hampshire; his sisters, Nancy Lancio of New London, New Hampshire, Suzanne Melillo and her husband Joseph of Winchester, New Hampshire, and Bonnie Bird and her husband Garth of Spanish Fork, Utah; and his beloved grandchildren, Kyle Mooney, Kelsey Limauro; and Jack Limauro. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Stephen Owen.
Donations in Ed’s memory to support returning veterans may be made to Unmet Needs, VFW Foundation, 406 W. 34th St., Suite 920, Kansas City, MO 64111 (unmetneeds.org).
