Dorothy S. Selander, 86, North Branford

Dorothy Sinclair Selander, 86, of North Branford, died March 10 at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where, as a registered nurse, she had dedicated over 35 years of her professional life.  She was the loving wife of the late Frederick Selander. Dorothy was born in Jamestown, New York, on Nov. 26, 1925, daughter of the late Ernest Folke Sinclair and Linnea Andersson Sinclair.  The death of her father at an early age brought her a stepfather, the late Paul Sorensen, who would be, in every way, her loving father and a grandfather to her children.

Dorothy graduated from the Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing and was a cadet nurse during World War II.  She gave many years of service to the North Branford Scholarship Association and was a member of IOGT, VASA, and the Swedish Junior League.  As an accomplished accordion player, she accompanied her beloved Frederick, playing Swedish music all around the state for many years.

She is survived by five beloved children, Lars Selander,  C. Lennart Selander and his wife Linda, Lynn Halovatch and her husband John, Ingrid Seales, and Leif Selander, and 12 loving grandchildren, Paul Selander and his wife Krissy, Leigh Epple and her husband Edward, Lynda Swerling and her husband Scott, Erica Marcinczyk and her husband Scott, Dr. Jessica Selander and her husband Nils, Jeffrey Halovatch and his wife Laura, Michael Halovatch and his wife Kate, David Halovatch and his wife Jen, Kevin Seales and his wife Lisa, Erik Seales, Laine Selander, and Christopher Selander. She is also survived by 17 cherished great-grandchildren, to whom she was devoted, and an 18th great-grandchild, whose birth she lovingly awaited.

Her memorial service will be held at the Tabor Lutheran Church, 45 Tabor Dr., Branford, on Wednesday, March 14, at 11 a.m.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the North Branford Scholarship Association, P.O. Box 241, North Branford, CT  06471.  The Keenan Funeral Home, North Branford, is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be offered at www.keenanfuneralhome.com
